Additional information

This research resulted from collaboration with Alstom [david.trainer@alstom.com] and the EU-funded FP7 ‘TWENTIES’ project [EC-GA 249812, £190k, 2010-2013] on integration of renewables [http://www.twenties-project.eu/node/1]. Voltage source converters (VSC) are attracting significant industry attention and are key to integration of far offshore wind [http://www.ofgem.gov.uk/Networks/offtrans/pdc/pwg/OTCP/reports/Pages/reports.aspx]. The paper describes a novel design of VSC that addresses the key issues of losses and the management of fault conditions with particular benefits to deployment in offshore HVDC networks [‘TWENTIES’ project liaison: olivier.despouys@rte-france.com ].
