Additional information

<28>Earlier work showed that measuring the width of cortical bone in routine dental radiographs can provide an indication of reduced bone mineral density associated with osteoporosis. This paper is significant because it examines a large set of images and, using our automatic method for measuring cortical width, demonstrates that cortical width shows the same pattern of variation with age in women as bone mineral density at other anatomical sites, strengthening the relationship between measured cortical width and systemic bone loss. In men the bone loss is much slower, but similar to that observed at other sites.
