Double-weighted statement

This 243-page, richly illustrated monograph is based on 12 months of original ethnographic fieldwork inside thirty homes in the Kansai region of Japan in 2002-2003. Originally planned in 1996, it required many years to negotiate the requisite access. It also incorporates collaboration over six weeks in 2006 with Susan Andrews, a professional photographer. Processing the more than 5000 photographs taken and selecting 250 took many months. In addition, each chapter contains in-depth historical contextualisation based on Japanese-language documents in archives in Japan. The book is therefore equivalent to at least five separate journal articles.
