Us and Them is the product of eight years of research and reflection on immigration controls. The underlying research was supported by six grants totalling �630,000. Field research, carried out across the UK, amounted to a total of 48 months over the period. Each of the eight main chapters could have been published as a separate article in a refereed journal.
