Additional information

To meet aircraft reliability requirements electrical drive systems need to be fault tolerant. This research, in collaboration with BAE Systems, achieved the world’s first truly fault tolerant aircraft actuation system, delivering lower life cycle costs than hydraulic equivalents. The paper demonstrates continued drive operation in the event of a motor or drive failure. The research findings led to a subsequent EU project (NEFS) £139,954 on a complete flap drive: the system was successfully tested at Airbus, Bremen.
