Additional information

Symbol timing is essential to correctly demodulate multicarrier communication signals. This paper contains a method to estimate the symbol timing by minimising the power difference between subsequent subcarriers. The computational complexity of the estimator is halved compared to state of the art methods, while its implementation does not suffer from self-noise problems. The work results from a 6 year collaboration with the Universities of Khalifa, UAE (Al-Dweik) and Tampere, Finland (Hazmi). The obtained performance advantages result in prolonged battery life of portable devices; an attribute highly desirable in cellular industry.
