This research shows preheating the oil is beneficial, but the effectiveness is limited by heat transfer losses in oil ways and, in particular, strong thermal coupling of bearing oil films to shells and journals. This has directed industry efforts toward bearing shell and oil gallery insulation to reduce heat transfer (ref. I.Pegg, ipegg@ford.com)
