Additional information

This paper was the first to derive a fully digital, exact design technique for parametric equalisers, one of the most important filters in audio processing. It significantly advanced the state of the art, since prior digital domain design attempts resulted in weak approximations. It represents a new approach, is easier to implement than previous techniques and does not require the bilinear transform. Our technique has been applied to a wide variety of digital filters, including shelving, peaking and notch filter design. This approach is used in teaching digital filter design without resorting to using analog prototypes (Peter Eastty, CTO, peter-eastty@oxford-digital.com).
