English abstract

On the basis of newly uncovered archival evidence, the article discusses the complex process of creation of several pieces of silverware made in Rome for Ercole and Ferrante Gonzaga in the 1530s after drawings by Giulio Romano. The article proposes a revision to the classic understanding of the artist-patron relationship, highlighting the fundamental role of intermediaries, who were responsible for the realization of these precious objects and had to negotiate economic, aesthetic and social issues in the process. In general, the article addresses issues of invention and execution, of patronage and material culture.
