Conceiving Freedom: Women of Color, Gender, and the Abolition of Slavery in Havana and Rio de Janeiro
This book is the product of a total of 9 years' research and writing. It was researched across four countries (primarily Brazil and Cuba, but also Spain and the UK), using multiple archives and libraries. Its innovative comparative insights into the gendered process of slave legal claims-making draw on a rich, extensive range of archival materials, which have never before been comparatively examined - indeed, many have not been consulted by historians before at all. Extensive residence in Brazil, Cuba and Spain was required in order to consult them. The work involved was time-consuming, painstaking, and involved acquiring fluency in both Spanish and Portuguese.
