This cover page article presents a proposal for all photonic memories also capable of performing on-chip photonic non-von-Neumann computing operations - the "holy grail" of optical computing - using a materials science approach. Nature Photonics featured this paper as a Research Highlight in January 2013 (Photonic Non-Volatile Storage, O Graydon) and it resulted in an invited talk at the MRS 2013. The paper was on the most downloaded list in 2012, and is now an editor's 50th anniversary pick. Dr Simone Raoux, IBM Research, Yorktown Heights, is now working with us to demonstrate practically the concept.
