This is an interdisciplinary collaboration between soil mechanics (Civil Engineering) and metallurgy (Materials Science). It was shown that soil modelling approaches can generate new insights on semi-solid alloy behaviour relevant to crystal growth and metal casting. These ideas were built within a larger research project for which Gourlay was awarded the 2009 IOM3 Frank-Fitzgerald Medal and 2010 IOM3 Silver medal, and led to an invited talk at the “Frontiers in Solidification Science” Symposium at TMS 2013 (USA).
