Additional information
The performance of the first active touchdown bearing design for use in magnetic bearing systems is reported. The basic rotor/stator dynamic contact issues that were identified have also been included in the international standard, ISO 14839-4 ‘Mechanical vibration – Vibration of rotating machinery equipped with active magnetic bearings – Part 4: Technical guidelines’, published in 2012. The research was funded by the EPSRC grant EP/D031389/1 ‘Controlled escape from trapped contact modes in magnetic bearing systems’.
