Additional information

The study provides an important paradigm shift in field of mechano-transduction: stem cells feel nano-scale properties rather than bulk properties. The work has been highlighted in high impact journals by other experts (Nat. Mater. News and Views 2012, v11; Science Editors’ choice, 2012, v336). The study helped secure further funding (Case studentship, £92k; EPSRC, EP/J501360/1, £21k; Royal Soc. Research Grant, £15k). The paper also led to invitation to two international conferences (Nanoscience 2013. China; ICFPAM13, New-Zealand) and to collaboration with groups of Prof. Duncan Sutherland (Aarhus University, Denmark, article in preparation) and Dr. Armando del Rio (Imperial College, London).
