Additional information

The one compartment measurement of solute diffusion avoided the complexity and imprecision of standard dual chamber measurement. The higher precision identified increased micro-solute transport through a cell layer/collagen combination barrier, possibly through remodelling of the latter; the finding is new and unexpected. The visiting student who undertook the electrochemical solute diffusion work was awarded best PhD prize in Biotechnology at the Middle East Technical University (Ankara). The work resulted in a new collaboration with this University and led to the appointment of Vadgama as advisor to its Centre for Excellence in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.
