This paper is one of a series produced in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh with funding from the Wellcome Trust. The work, culminating in this paper, was recognised through award of the Negma Lerads International prize on Mechanobiology of Cartilage and Chondrocyte to Prof Lee. The study formed the basis of invited keynote presentations at the prestigious Orthopaedic Research Society annual meeting (February 2010 – New Orleans, less than 20 invited presentations from over 3000 presentations) and the International Cartilage Repair Society (September 2010, Barcelona). The work has supported successful funding applications from the AO Foundation and Arthritis Research UK.
