Differential regulation of gene expression in isolated tendon fascicles exposed to cyclic tensile strain in vitro.
Optimisation of mechanical stimulation of cell-based models enables the development of optimum strategies for regenerative therapies. This paper examines the mechanical regulation of selected genes stimulated by short-term applications of cyclic tensile strain on tenocytes within isolated tendon fascicles; this model represents a more physiological system than studies using isolated cells. Results highlight the temporal balance of anabolic and catabolic genes that are majorly influenced by defined loading regimes. The study impacts on the understanding of normal matrix turnover in tendons and in dysfunction of tendon cells in the presence of tendinopathies.
