Additional information

This paper proposed a new neural network model for Lobula Giant Movement Detector (LGMD), a wide-field visual neuron located in the Lobula layer of the Locust nervous system. It was implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip by taking advantage of the inherent parallelism exhibited by the LGMD, and tested on real-time video streams. It has the potential application in the visual-based collision avoidance systems for vehicles and robots as a bio-inspired visual sensor. This paper is a key outcome of a three-year TSB funded project led by Professor Hunter in collaboration with E2V Ltd, in Lincoln.
