This work is an international, multidisciplinary collaboration between UK, Spain and Germany (and the European Synchrotron Facility, ESRF, in Grenoble, France), for the study of the interactions between Uranium and soil bacteria, and their potential application for the treatment of nuclear waste. We studied the biomineralisation of uranium by bacteria isolated from the groundwater of a radioactive waste repository, and provided a molecular-scale description of the constituents on the bacterial cells involved with radionuclide interactions. These findings are crucial to establish the adequate parameters for the use of bacteria as a possible remediation strategy for radionuclides in contaminated groundwater.
