Additional information

This paper proposed a new method for subjective video picture quality comparison. With the method, the HDTV formats with certain bandwidth requirements were tested. One of the results presented was that the interlacing format (1080i/25) was not so efficiently compressed, comparing with a progressive scanning one (1080p/50). This was due to the compression algorism (like H.264). The work was done in collaboration with European Broadcasting Union and Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications–Heinrich-Hertz–Institut that developed the H.264. As an indirect impact, some European manufacturers phased out the interlacing formats, in preference to the progressive ones.
