Additional information

This application of CFD to the simulation of flow through packed beds represented the most complex and realistic geometry tackled to this date in the literature, and is of direct importance in the chemical engineering industry. It generated interest within BASF who are using these techniques (christianandreas.winkler@basf.com). It has impacted on the design of diesel engine exhaust filters, especially regarding sustainability and competitiveness in the automotive industry, with collaboration with the Politechnico di Milano in this area, as well as research on mantle rocks with UCL (h.downes@ucl.ac.uk). The paper won the journal's award for most cited article 2010-2012.
