A novel flow battery: A lead acid battery based on an electrolyte with soluble lead(II)
This work has attracted attention both from academics and industry. For example the project “Grids Soluble Lead Flow Battery Technology” led by Prof Shirley Meng at UC San Diego (shmeng@ucsd.edu) and industrial partners (General Atomics, Dr Aaron Sathrum, Aaron.Sathrum@ga.com) with funding of $2m from the US Department of Energy are further developing the battery technology and will have a pilot scale operation in company General Atomics within 2 years. Also, £500 K has recently been awarded by Department of Energy and Climate Change to support research into improving efficiency and cyclability of the soluble lead flow batteries.
