This volume arises from a conference I organised for the BFE in November 2007. I convened the conference and organised and chaired the selection committee. I then commissioned the papers in this volume, some of which were delivered at the conference. The editing process required extensive critical dialogue with the authors. I wrote the substantial introduction, which at c.10,000 words was always intended to stand as a paper in its own right and which contains a range of original research and ideas. I also interviewed Ben Mandelson, then edited the interview transcript into the agreed version published here.
