Cities in Modernity: Representations and Productions of Metropolitan Space, 1840-1930
Cities in Modernity comprises twelve substantial chapters, each based on original archival research. It also includes a major theoretical synthesis of and original contribution to understandings of urban modernity. The book provides a comparative analysis of histories of urban modernity, analysing key aspects of urban modernity across three case study cities over a 90 year period, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. It draws on a wide range of historical sources from each city: fine art, imaginative literature, censuses, assessment rolls, directories and insurance atlases. The book is illustrated with numerous original photographs, figures, tables and maps compiled from these sources.
