This paper presents a multi-disciplinary study which suggests an intervention strategy in terms of sustainable waste management. This states that for eco-design to be effective, identifying sustainability as a functional requirment is essential in the design process. This paper led to further work, in a recent paper by the same authors, with a survey of 2000 companies that showed dysfunctional elements in the design process in modern product innovation, rendering many of the current Government / EU environmental strategies of limited benefit.
