English abstract

This article highlights the impact that some 250 Italian dancers had on the London theatrical scene of the eighteenth century by considering the activities of some of the more prominent performers and choreographers. Over the course of 100 years, their style of dance and choreographic inventiveness exerted considerable influence, while the reception of particular artists had a marked effect on the status of theatrical dance generally. Two appendices contribute to our knowledge of theatrical networking in 18th century Europe, by identifying all known Italian dancers and choreographers active in London, establishing the dates, while giving indications of their repertory.
