Additional information

The code described in this paper, Opaque Mineral Identification (OMI), is capable of speeding up research into identification of ore-forming minerals by 20 to 30%, constituting an important step in resource assessment for mining operations. This has been recognised by the Commission on Ore Mineralogy (COM) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), an authoritative global association (http://www.ima-mineralogy.org, http://project.gtk.fi/com/index.html)which determines definitions of minerals and which distributed the program in 2011 to IMA membership in 38 nations (contact: Dr Chris Stanley, email: c.stanley@nhm.ac.uk). The program is now well-established in most major mineralogical laboratories around the world.
