Additional information

The model presented in this paper is the core component of a model-based decision support strategy for managing artificial ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit – ICU. For the first time, patient data is used to ‘individualise’, in real-time, a predictive model capable of forecasting blood gases. Due to the real-time capabilities and predictive performance of the approach, the methodology was selected for clinical trial. In collaboration with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust (as part of EPSRC project EP/C520807/1), the decision support system has entered Phase I trials for use in the ICU (Professor Gary Mills, Gary.Mills@sth.nhs.uk).
