Additional information

These results have led to a series of important advances in damping design, have been implemented using magneto-rheological devices, are being used to design nonlinear damping materials, and formed the foundation for work package one of ERC Advanced Investigator Grant 226037 €1.95m. The paper proves that passive nonlinear damping which is an odd function, for example a cubic damping element, can reduce the output energy at the resonance without increasing the energy in the frequency response tails. The results show for the first time that significant benefits arise from using nonlinear passive damping compared to linear passive or active damping.
