Cine cerebrospinal fluid imaging in multiple sclerosis
With >100 subjects, this is the largest clinical trial to investigate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in MS. It demonstrated that MS is associated with increased CSF pulsatility and showed (for the first time) that this is correlated with MS-lesion formation. Beggs used a systems engineering approach to interpret the results. Follow-on work by Beggs (BMC Medicine 2013, 11:142 and Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging – in press) has shown that increased CSF pulsatility is probably due to constricted venous outflow altering intracranial compliance. Collectively, this work represents a major leap forward in understanding the CSF dynamics associated with MS.
