This paper proposes an innovative technique for summarizing a video stream into a new form of visualization called VideoPerpetuoGram (VPG). Its visual encoding scheme was designed based on an empirical study, and was tested on the grand-challenge datasets captured by the EU CAVIAR project. It showed significant algorithmic and perceptual advantages over existing methods for video summarization. This innovation was awarded a European patent EP2112619A1. This work directly led to three funded projects in areas of surveillance and sports video analysis. Its practical usefulness is expected to be at the same level as electrocardiograms (ECGs) and seismographs.
