This article in Biophys J. is the first to give a thorough investigation using cardiac human and canine data, combined with stochastic simulation, of the role of intrinsic and extrinsic noise in the delayed rectifier potassium channel IKs in modulating temporal and spatial variability in ventricular cardiac repolarization. Pathological conditions resulting in gap junctional uncoupling or a decrease in repolarization reserve uncover the manifestation of IKs noise, resulting in enhanced ventricular variability.
