Trabecular level analysis of bone cement augmentation: a comparative experimental and finite element study
This study, in collaboration with the University of Bristol, is first to use a novel rig to image cement-augmented specimens during loading under high resolution x-ray tomography. Cement is widely used in orthopaedics and our earlier validation studies showed current modelling methods vastly overestimate the cement-bone stiffness. This paper provides a novel means to examine the microstructural behaviour and enables a direct comparison with micro finite element models, leading to improved model accuracy. Research led to invited talks (World Biomechanics Singapore 2010, Injectable Biomaterials Research Society (GRIBOI) Boston 2011), and contributed to successful major follow-on funding (ERC306615, Wilcox, £1M).
