Additional information

Policy makers risk systemically missing targets if they neglect the rebound effect. This study quantifies rebound effects for abatement actions by UK households using a novel approach and with greater rigour than previously. It has attracted significant interest from Defra and BIS; its publication has led, amongst other things, to a presentation at a European Commission DG Environment meeting; prominent multiple mentions in European Commission DG ENV report “Addressing the Rebound Effect” (Maxwell et al 2011); it was reviewed in Nature Climate Change (Hubaceck and Guan 2011); and was the focus of a Guardian article which received nearly 50 comments.
