Jorge Pardo: Tecoh

This research contains a portfolio of 3 publications, which culminates in the book ‘Jorge Pardo: Tecoh’ (Sternberg Press, 2013). Initial research commenced with the book ‘Jorge Pardo’ (Richter Verlag, 2009) followed by ‘David Adjaye, Authoring’ (Lars Muller, 2012). The portfolio explores notions of site-sensitivity within architectural practice by following the realisation of Pardo’s monumental architectural work, ‘Tecoh’, in the Yucatan jungle. The Sternberg publication offers the only available glimpse of the project, as it was primarily conceived as a private residence. In this book I provide a critical framework for Pardo’s work in the Yucatan, in the essay ‘Critical Regionalism in Overdrive’, as well as in-conversation dialogues developed through all three publications. The research was funded by a £50,000 grant from La Vaca Independiente who previously commissioned the architectural project. The three publications contain interviews I conducted with Pardo, which extend this analysis by examining Pardo’s interaction with the topography, location and history of the site. To debate the ideas explored in the book, ‘Jorge Pardo: Tecoh’, I organised and presented a one-day conference at Tate Modern on October 18, 2013, funded by an additional grant of £15,000 from La Vaca Independiente. Speakers included the museum director Michael Govan, the art historian Pamela Lee, and the architect David Adjaye.
