Additional information

La rupture ineluctable was commissioned by Heather Roche through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts ($5000 CAD) and has been performed in Montréal, Huddersfield, Bangor, Copenhagen, Ljubljana, and Basel, receiving 10 performances in total. The underpinning research agenda is fourfold: 1) a search for elegance, straightforwardness and simplicity in notating complex sonic material that would have resulted through what I term ‘bounded improvisation’ in my previous practice (for instance Output #3); 2) an investigation of the relation between economy of musical material and dynamic form; 3) a consideration of power relations between a soloist and an electronic counterpart; and 4) research into the impact of loudspeaker positioning in creating an augmented acoustic instrument. Technical aspects of the research underpinning the composition are outlined in the following portfolio: 1) Harker, A., Tremblay, P.A. (2012) ‘The HISSTools Convolution Toolbox: Convolution for the Masses’. Proceedings of the ICMC 2012, Ljubljana pp. 148-155. ISBN 9780984527410. This paper explains the musical thinking guiding a flexible use of convolution, and the experimental applications of rapid and flexible loudspeaker and hyper-proximity microphone capture corrections in the performance of the work. 2) Harker, A., Tremblay, PA., ‘Rethinking the Box: Approaches to the Reality of Electronic Music Performance’, IRCAM Forum, Paris (2013).
