Additional information

This is the first major study of Christian Wolff’s music. I have co-edited the book as well as written two chapters. I co-compiled the extensive work-list, bibliography and discography. Work on the book was supported by an AHRC Research Leave grant (£22,300) and a Getty Research Library scholarship ($1,500). The research in the book is underpinned by performance-based research evidenced in the following portfolio of concerts and lectures: 1. ‘For Pianist: the piano music of Christian Wolff’, featured all of Wolff’s major solo piano works. After a three-concert series over a single weekend in Sheffield (Persistence Works gallery, 2009), further performances took place in London (The Warehouse) and the Universities of Leeds and Sussex. Subsequently an American tour included performances in New York, Hanover (Dartmouth College) and Los Angeles (California Institute of the Arts); 2. Small Preludes, aytoods and other new music from America a concert given at hcmf// 2010 included the world premiere of Christian Wolff’s Small Preludes; 3. As pianist with the experimental music ensemble Apartment House, I performed in a portrait concert of the composer in the ‘Angelica’ festival, Bologna, Italy (May, 2013); 4. ‘Playing the game: approaches to performing the piano music of Christian Wolff’, a public lecture-recital at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles. 5. Other lectures about Wolff have included: lecture-recital at 6th Biennial International Conference on Music Since 1900, University of Keele (2009); Guest speaker at 2009 Ostrava New Music Days (2009); Coventry University International Symposium on Experimental Music (2010).
