Additional information

Determining the location of protons in organic crystal structures is important for understanding the properties of any organic material, including, for example, pharmaceuticals, organic electronics or ionic liquids. This work demonstrated that XPS is capable of reliably locating protons even in relatively complex organic structures. The approach has since been incorporated in published work from several leaders in the crystallisation field (HG Brittain, SL Price). Based on this paper the PhD student (first author) received the '2010 Young Scientist of the Year' prize of the British Association for Crystal Growth.
