Landscape, Well-being and Environment

Landscape Well-being and Environment is a text conceived by Coles and developed by Coles and Millman to satisfy the need for a body of work that explores current thinking regarding the role of landscape in underpinning the well-being of individuals. The work draws upon the original research of a range of (24) international researchers currently exploring the different facets of well-being and who originally presented at the international conference Well-being 2011, developed and hosted by Coles and Millman. The collection represents a focused, edited presentation of material in 11chapters, derived from the original peer reviewed conference papers but refined/reworked by the editors, with an additional introduction, and concluding chapter (chapter 12) by the editors to critically review the chapters and bring concepts and ideas together developing concluding themes and models of well-being. The aim of the book and the editorial process was to produce a comprehensive, coherent body of work, grounded in research, which explores the relationship between landscape and well-being, accessible to diverse audiences and written in a style that makes such available to a range of readers and situations. All chapters report on new research including work funded by AHRC and ESRC; they are supplemented by the inclusion of full bibliographies to greatly enhance the academic quality and potential of the text as a unique resource, including case study material, contextual literature, methodological explorations, supporting data and conceptual frameworks. The approach is cross disciplinary reflecting its purpose to explore the multi-dimensions of well-being and landscape with well-being themes regarding - living well and living greener, modelling well-being relationships, aesthetic for walking, perceptions of place, interactive urban landscapes, greenery in multi-family houses, playable space and older people, kids in the City, culture’s place in well-being, woodlands, children’s well-being, landscape, well-being and environment.
