Additional information

This work was supported by an EPSRC platform grant EP/E001874/1. The laser-arc hybrid process can achieve an order of magnitude improvement in productivity, without compromise in quality, by utilising the complementary characteristics of arc and laser technologies. The outputs from this paper were used in:

‘Laser – Hybrid Welding of Pipeline Steels’, sponsored by the Materials Innovation Institute, Netherlands, [project no. – M31.8.12461], with TU Delft as academic and Heerema Marine Corp. as industrial partners (contact Dr Bagus Yudidobroto byudodibroto@hmc-heerema.com).
