This is a new edition and translation of a book published (OUP 2007), which includes a substantial new section of new research and material. Please read pages 300-403 for the new material.
'These chapters are new sections of a new version of a book published in 2007. This version received the Antico Pignolo prize for best book published on Venice in 2011-12; inverting the old sequence, it starts from a case-study and ends with a European-wide discussion. The sections submitted are: a chapter on the interpretation of the polemical pamphlets published during the 1606-7 controversy between Venice and Rome; a new comparative conclusion that explicitly assesses analogies and differences with other early modern European cities; a new analytical bibliography of 321 pamphlets held in libraries in London, Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome.'
