<15>Hard disks are fundamental components of storage systems. Yet elegant models of their performance remain elusive due to idiosyncrasies such as zoning and dynamic request scheduling. This paper develops a novel analytical approximation for the response time of I/O requests processed by a zoned disk drive. Unlike almost all related work, the model ambitiously targets arbitrary moments of response time, rather than just the mean, and model accuracy is demonstrated by comparing model predictions with device measurements, rather than simulations. This paper was a key output of the EPSRC grant "Intelligent Performance Optimisation of Data Storage Systems" (EP/F010192/1).
