This monograph of nearly 100,000 words uses an extensive body of primary materials, including rare pamphlets, reviews, lectures, poems, plays, and other works produced between 1760 and 1830. Much of this material had not been previously catalogued or acknowledged. The research required a sustained and in-depth approach to one of the period’s most influential yet under-examined authors, and detailed analysis of different forms of scholarship within an historical context (antiquarianism, biography, textual scholarship, exegesis) in order to make sense of Chatterton’s complex reception history.
