This was the first paper to show how purely extracellular signals can be used to detect UP/DOWN state transitions – previously it had been assumed that it was necessary to use the whole-cell patch clamp technique. This paper was featured in Faculty of 1000 Biology (http://f1000.com/prime/3184978) and in the book “Cells – Advances in Research and Applications: 2012 edition” (A Ashton, ed). Our method has found its way into neurophysiological practice already (e.g. Hawking et al J Neurophys 2013;15:315-320) and also underlies subsequent methodological development (e.g. MacFarland et al PLoS ONE 2011;6: e21606).
