Short-term synaptic plasticity in the deterministic Tsodyks-Markram model leads to unpredictable network dynamics.
<24> This work is a partnership between Paris (INRIA), Bilbao (Ikerbasque) and San Diego (Salk Institute). The study reports for the first time a route to chaos in the well-established Tsodyks-Markram model for short-term synaptic plasticity. This raises fundamental issues about the impact of local of synaptic activity on large-scale brain electrical activity, e.g. leading to the insight that chaos, at the level of short-term synaptic plasticity, mediates switches between cognitive states. This work led to a new collaboration with experimentalist Afia Ali (UCL) to validate the results on neurophysiology studies.
