Additional information

This paper is the result of a multi-disciplinary collaboration between geologists and a civil engineer. The innovative and cross-disciplinary nature of this publication led to Dr Kitajima's appointment to a position as assistant professor at Texas A&M University starting September 2014. In addition, Dr Kitajima was selected as the physical properties specialist for expedition 348 of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program on "Understanding the Mechanism of Great Earthquakes" as part of the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (http://www.jamstec.go.jp/chikyu/nantroseize/e/crew_348.html).
