The idea for this book was devised jointly by Dalton and Appleby who invited a number of individual scholars to contribute chapters. The book was co-edited by Dalton and Appleby who also co-authored the Introduction (pp. 1-6). The book also contains a chapter written by Dalton, entitled 'The Outlaw Hereward ''the Wake'': His Companions and Enemies' (pp. 7-36).
