The paper, together with (DoI:10.1061/(ASCE) 0733-9399(2009)135:3(203)), led to an invited lecture on “Continua with Microstructure: Second-gradient theory” at the 21st ALERT Geomaterials Doctoral School 2010 (http://alertgeomaterials.eu/presentations-of-the-alert-doctoral-school-2010/). This research led to a €150k grant from the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT/6415/24.5.2012) and a €100k EU/FP7 Marie Curie Career Integration Grant (PCIG13-GA-2013-61809). The work stimulated further international research in using strain-gradient constitutive models in three dimensions: Germany/Norway, DoI:10.1016/j.commatsci.2011.02.026; and Greece, DoI:10.1002/nme.2862.
