We demonstrate that to maximise the efficiency of photovoltaic devices, harvesting the near infrared and optimisation of device architecture is critical. The editor of this leading journal commented "I like the work you propose here as I strongly believe that the PV field needs to extract as much efficiency as possible from these devices ..... Architecture is interesting and important as well." This work provides a roadmap for those developing these technologies including a generic model suitable for any bi-layer photovoltaic system that can be utilized to provide quantitative predictions and guide experimental work.
