COAT: COnstraint-based anonymization of transactions
<15>The algorithm in this paper is implemented in the Clinical Anonymization Tool used by Vanderbilt University's Health Information Privacy Lab to screen data for release to biorepositories, including NIH-funded databases, in accordance with US data sharing policies. [Referee: Doxa Chatzopoulou, dhatzop@ucla.edu]. The paper proposes a general framework for anonymizing any transaction dataset, which is also used to solve the problem in Loukides et al (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2010) [http://dx.doi.org/10.1073/pnas.0911686107]. The importance of solving the problem was acknowledged in [http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v470/n7333/full/nature09764.html] and the media - e.g. [http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2010/04/12/researchers-aim-to-prevent-identity-theft-from-medical-records/], [http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/04/scrubbing-ids-out-of-medical-records-for-genetic-studies/].
